Beach combing Washington State Agates to make jewelry and decor

The Art of Making Agate Stone Jewelry

I create each piece of natural Agate jewelry by collecting my own beach stone Agates on the Olympic Peninsula and Agates down in Lewis County, which can vary in different colors and patterns. I find banded Agate, Carnelian Agate and Moss Agate. I never know what kind of Agate I will find on the beach, and I am always pleasantly surprised to find water line Agates and Agates with lots of colors. I take the Agates home where I cut them on my tile saw and then polish them on my lapidary equipment. Some shaping and drilling is done by hand with my Dremel tool. After polishing the Agate, I create a design for a unique piece of jewelry inspired by my natural surroundings here in Washington State. Then begins the metalsmithing process of hand sawing, soldering, texturing, stone setting, oxidizing and more. Occasionally I also wire wrap Agates into pendant necklaces. I work mainly with sterling silver, stainless steel and occasionally copper. It's a time intensive process to ensure that your jewelry is high quality and long-lasting. From the ocean to your skin, your jewelry is meticulously handmade with care and intention.

About Agate

Agate is a variety of Chalcedony, a type of micro-crystalline Quartz, and has a hardness of 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale, making it a very durable semi-precious stone for jewelry. Agate can be found in an array of colors and patterns of bands and orbs, making each one unique. Sagenite, Plume and Dendritic Agate are just some, to name a few. It's found in areas with volcanic activity so it is fairly abundant in Washington State. Carnelian is also a fairly common stone found in the Lewis County area of Washington.

Agate is associated with the Earth element, bringing holistic balance, stability and confidence to the wearer, and is the perfect secondary birthstone for the month of May.
